- A dry spell in spring or late summer. The timber has to be dry through, not just dry on the surface — coating wet wood seals the moisture in and the finish lifts within a season.
- Spray or brush?
- Spray is much faster on a long run and gets into the grain. Brush is better where a neighbour has plants right against the boundary, since overspray does not stop at your fence.
- How long will it last?
- Two to three years for most treatments in Irish conditions, less on a south-facing or exposed run. Cleaning off the moss first is what makes the difference between two years and one.
