Cleaning with white vinegar works well on glass, taps, kettles and most sealed hard surfaces because its mild acidity cuts through mineral deposits and grease. It is the wrong choice for natural stone, waxed wood, unsealed grout and rubber seals, and it must never be mixed with bleach. Knowing which jobs suit vinegar and which do not saves you from dulling a countertop or damaging a finish you cannot undo.
How does cleaning with white vinegar actually work?
White vinegar is a dilute acetic acid solution, and that acidity is what breaks down limescale, soap scum and light grease. The same property is exactly why it is unsuitable for anything that reacts badly to acid, from polished stone to metal it can corrode. Vinegar is not a registered disinfectant, so treat it as a degreaser and deodoriser rather than something that kills germs on its own.
The ordinary strength sold in supermarkets is enough for household jobs, so there is rarely a reason to look for something stronger. A more concentrated vinegar product is also more likely to damage a sensitive surface, so stick with standard white vinegar rather than assuming stronger always works better.
Where white vinegar works well
Vinegar is genuinely useful in a few specific places around the house.
- Glass and mirrors, diluted with water in a spray bottle, buffed dry with a lint-free cloth to avoid streaks.
- Limescale on taps, showerheads and kettles, where the acid dissolves mineral buildup over a soak.
- Stainless steel sinks and pans, along with enamelled cast iron, which generally tolerate vinegar well.
- Sealed ceramic tile and glazed worktops, for everyday grease and water spots.
- Musty smells in bins, lunchboxes or a fridge, where a wipe-down with diluted vinegar helps cut the odour rather than just masking it.

What not to clean with white vinegar
Several common surfaces are damaged, sometimes permanently, by vinegar's acidity.
- Natural stone such as marble, limestone and travertine. These stones contain calcite, which reacts with acid on contact and leaves a dull, rough patch called etching that cannot be wiped away. Granite is more resistant to etching but vinegar can still break down its sealant over time and leave it open to staining.
- Hardwood floors and waxed furniture. Repeated contact with vinegar breaks down wax finishes, leaving wood duller over time, and standing liquid can swell bare or unsealed timber.
- Unsealed or already damaged grout, where the acid gradually wears away the surface and weakens it.
- Electronics screens, since vinegar can strip the anti-glare or oleophobic coating on phones, laptops and TVs.
- Rubber gaskets and hoses, for example the door seal on a washing machine or dishwasher, which can dry out and crack with repeated exposure.
Why you should never mix vinegar with bleach
This is the one rule that matters most for safety. Bleach reacts with acids, including vinegar, to release chlorine gas, which irritates the eyes, throat and lungs and can be dangerous in an enclosed bathroom or kitchen. Canada's consumer product safety authority has issued a public advisory specifically warning people never to mix bleach with vinegar or any other acidic cleaner, and to keep the two well apart, even when rinsing one off before using the other.
If you ever smell a sharp, swimming-pool-like odour after combining cleaning products, leave the room immediately, open windows and doors, and do not go back in until the air has cleared.
How to use white vinegar safely at home
- Check the surface first. Confirm it is not natural stone, waxed wood, unsealed grout or a rubber part before you start.
- Dilute for general use. A roughly equal mix of vinegar and water in a spray bottle suits most everyday jobs; use it closer to neat for stubborn limescale.
- Test a hidden patch. Wipe a small, out-of-sight area and wait a few minutes before treating the whole surface.
- Never combine it with bleach or any bleach-based product, including some toilet and mould sprays.
- Rinse promptly if vinegar accidentally splashes onto stone, wood or electronics, then dry the area.
- Store vinegar away from bleach and other chemical cleaners so the two are never mixed by accident.
When to reach for something else
Vinegar is not always the right tool.
