Preparing for upholstery cleaning is mostly about making the fabric accessible and sharing useful details before the appointment. A little preparation helps an independent cleaner choose a suitable method and spend the visit on the furniture rather than moving obstacles.
Before you book
- Check the manufacturer care label, if it is still attached.
- Take clear photos of stains, worn patches or damage.
- Note the fabric, age of the furniture and any recent DIY treatment.
- Be specific about pet odours, food spills, ink, wine or other marks.
On the day of the clean
- Remove throws, cushions, toys and personal items from the furniture.
- Vacuum loose dust and crumbs if practical.
- Leave a clear route from the entrance to the room.
- Keep pets and children away from the work area while products and equipment are in use.
- Plan ventilation and allow time for the fabric to dry before using it again.
What not to do
Avoid saturating the fabric with a new chemical product shortly before the appointment. Mixing products can make assessment harder and may set or spread a stain. Do not scrub aggressively, especially on delicate or textured fabrics, because abrasion can change the pile or colour.
Questions worth asking
Ask which cleaning method is suitable for your upholstery, what access or water is needed, and the expected drying window for your room. The cleaner can assess the item and explain what result is realistic for its condition.
